Tamil actor Vijay, who recently forayed into politics by starting his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has been accorded ‘Y+’ security by the Indian government. The decision came after an evaluation by the Intelligence Bureau, which came up with the possibility of security threats to the politician-turned-actor.
The security is decided on a number of parameters, ranging from threats from radical groups, syndicates of organized crime, to the public stature of an individual. On assessment of intelligence reports, central security agencies advised improved protection for Vijay.
VIP Security Categories in India:
‘Z+’ Security: The highest non-SPG security level, comprising over 30 armed personnel ensuring round-the-clock protection.
‘Z’ Security: Includes around 20 security personnel and an escort vehicle for added safety.
‘Y+’ Security: Offers mobile security with armed guards, along with residential security—similar to the cover provided to Chief Ministers.
‘X’ Security: The most basic category, providing a personal security officer (PSO) with minimal additional protection.
With Vijay’s political career gaining momentum, the allocation of ‘Y+’ security highlights the increasing security concerns surrounding his transition from cinema to public leadership.
