Suriya’s Latest film Retro was in the news prior to its release, primarily because of the association with acclaimed director Karthik Subbaraj. Having such a powerful pairing, expectations were obviously high. Fans and critics expected something really gripping and offbeat—a specialty Karthik is renowned for offering.
But when the movie released, it could not match the pre-release expectations. While it generated a lot of excitement before its release, Retro fell flat with audiences and became a box office disappointment, being a flop in no time.
In a shocking turn of events, the creators are now looking to revive Retro in a digital avatar. Industry gossip is that the movie will be re-released shortly as a web series on an OTT platform. This new version will purportedly feature additional shots and material that had not been included in the original theatrical release. Director Karthik Subbaraj is reportedly heavily invested in reformatting the film for the streaming population.
While some view this as a new chance to provide the story with a second life, others are wary, wondering why a flop movie is being re-packaged for OTT. Nevertheless, in the current digital era, material tends to derive fresh worth on streaming websites—even things that failed in cinemas.
The movie also stars Pooja Hegde playing the lead female role along with Suriya, while Santhosh Narayanan has composed the music, further increasing its OTT version value.
Through this surprise twist, it will have to be seen if Retro can make up for itself as a hit web series.
