In Tamil cinema, the rivalry between the films of leading stars is always a much-awaited event, with fans waiting with bated breath to see how the box office competition will unfold. This Sankranti season is no different, as several major releases are lined up, increasing the fight for attention among the audiences. But for actor Suriya, this competition has built up a big challenge for his next film.
Suriya’s latest venture Karuppu has been finding it difficult to pick up steam following a string of underwhelming releases. In a bid to cash in on the festive season, the actor had earlier set his sights on releasing Karuppu during the Pongal season, picking up on a positive reception. Things, however, have taken a different turn with the highly awaited film Jana Nayagan of Vijay slated for a grand release on January 9, to be followed by Sivakarthikeyan’s Parashakti, which is scheduled for a Sankranti release on January 14.
With two biggie releases to be done within the same window, Suriya and his team are now thinking twice about Karuppu’s release timing. With the recent woes of their previous films, they believe that going head-to-head with these big-ticket releases would affect Karuppu’s box office performance quite considerably. Sources indicate that Suriya’s team is now considering a summer release, where the movie might get a freer run without the intense competition.
As events progress, it is unclear whether Suriya and his crew will release a formal statement regarding the delay of the release. Fans and trade insiders are waiting for guidance on the new release plan for Karuppu.
