Devi Sri Prasad is one of the most prolific music composers ever in the history of Telugu cinema after its inception 90 years ago. He entered the music scene with a private album ‘Dance Party’ and then went on to debut as a film composer in 1999 with the Telugu film Devi. He derived his first name from this film’s title and became popular with the sobriquet ‘DSP’ among music lovers. He successfully completed 25 years as composer today as Devi released on March 12th 1999.
After his debut in Tollywood, there is no looking back for Devi because he emerged as one of the leading musicians with numerous chartbuster albums to his credit. He belted out a foot-tapping album with his third outing ‘Anandam’ and announced his arrival in style. After Anandam, Devi scored hits with Kalusukovalani, Sontham and Khadgam. He got the biggest break with Nagarjuna’s Manmadhudu and Varsham was the turning point in his career.
With back-to-back hit albums like Arya and Shankar Dada MBBS, DSP consolidated his position in Tollywood. By this time, he was in his prime form dishing out chart-topping songs very frequently. He hit a purple patch by delivering consecutive hit albums over the years.
Like every technician in the film industry, there was a lean phase in Devi Sri Prasad’s career as well due to various factors. However, he stood the test of time and bounced back strongly whenever critics wrote him off with his signature-style renditions. With the massive success of Pushpa album, DSP bagged accolades from pan-India audiences.
Devi Sri Prasad tested his luck in other languages as well. He composed numerous albums in Tamil and Hindi.
He won many awards at renowned events like Film Fare, Nandi, SIIMA, Santosham IIFA utsavam, etc. He is also known for making guest appearances in some of his songs besides star heroes. DSP’s onstage performances during audio events fetched him a legion of fans and he was often called a live wire because of his unwavering energy levels.
Devi is known for composing redefining item numbers and romantic melodies in Tollywood.
