Pan-India sensation Kantara and its prequel Kantara: Chapter 1 have cemented Rishab Shetty’s position as a filmmaker and actor who brings authentic village stories to the big screen. Speaking to journalists recently, Rishab, who won the National Award for Best Actor for Kantara, shared insights into the challenges and creative process behind these films, which have garnered immense acclaim and box office success.
Rishab revealed that while writing Kantara: Chapter 1 posed significant challenges due to its complex narrative, the team was determined to capture every nuance of the story. “We faced numerous challenges on set every day, but it never felt like pressure. Considering the audience’s overwhelming love for Kantara, we treated this project with special responsibility. The first film achieved a lifetime collection, and Chapter 1 earned that in just a week. Telugu audiences have also embraced the film warmly,” he said.
Highlighting his connection to folk narratives, Rishab added, “Our country is a treasure trove of folk tales. That’s where the idea of Kantara came from. We shot both films entirely in my village for authenticity, even setting up a 22,000 sq. ft. studio for indoor scenes. Villagers participated as junior artists, crew members, and artisans, which added depth and authenticity to the project. The success of the films has brought immense pride to everyone involved.” He also confirmed his next project, Jai Hanuman, set to begin filming in January, emphasizing that it may take another two years before he directs again.
