Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has sharply criticized Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for purportedly putting hurdles in front of important irrigation schemes in Telangana, especially in the drought hit Palamuru area. Showing deep concern, Revanth asked why a veteran leader like Chandrababu would go against Telangana’s farmers’ interests.
Revanth Reddy went on to say that big-ticket projects like the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme and the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project—both started on Chandrababu’s watch as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh—are now opposed by him. He called it ironic that the same leader who initiated these lifeline projects is today opposing them. He also referred to the Nettempadu and Koilsagar projects, which, according to him, are essential for water security and agricultural sustainability in the region.
The Telangana CM was particularly scathing in his comments about the Banakacharla project, veiling possible consequences for the Palamuru district. He cautioned the continued implementation of the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme could dry up tremendous farming land in Telangana directly affecting thousands of farmers. Revanth stated that his government had already made several representations to the Centre requesting it to review and put an end to the Banakacharla project because of its potentially harmful impact on Telangana.
Referring to the emotional and historical affinity, Revanth brought back to Chandrababu’s memory that his own family had adopted Palamuru district in the past. He asked how the person with such an affinity could now advocate for projects that could hurt the same area. “These projects were initiated during your tenure. Why defy your own legacy?” Revanth asked, appealing to Chandrababu to consider the larger meaning of his action.
Appealing for a reasonable and people-friendly way forward Revanth Reddy called upon Chandrababu to alter his position. Emphasising that Telangana will not and cannot allow the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme to happen as the scheme is aimed at the water needs of southern Telangana, Revanth asked Chandrababu to honourably withdraw the scheme and ax it in the name of justice and fair consideration for the regions.
“We’re not seeking conflict. We’re seeking justice. Let the people of Palamuru live with dignity—don’t take away their right to water,” Revanth concluded.
