A trap is being tightened around the then CID chief Sunil Kumar in the case of former MP Raghuramakrishna Raju being tortured in police custody. The CID police filed a case of treason against Raju, the then Narsapur MP and arrested him on May 14, 2021 and took him to the CID office in Guntur.

The police has reportedly obtained vital evidence in support of custodial torture by the then CID chief in the investigation into the complaint filed by the then Narasapur MP Raghurama Krishnam Raju at Nagarampalem Police Station, Guntur.

In that complaint, he mentioned Guntur SP Satish Kumar to register cases of attempted murder against former CM Jaganmohan Reddy, then CID chief  Sunil Kumar, Intelligence Chief PSR Anjaneyulu, investigation officer Vijaya Paul and then GGH superintendent Dr. Neelam Prabhavati as accused.

On the night of Raghuramakrishna Raju’s arrest, the sentry who was on duty gave a statement to the police that he brought four men with handkerchiefs to hide his face and came to the office of the CID boss. Based on the information given by the sentry after verifying it with call data, the police focused on whether CID chief Sunil Kumar was present at the Guntur CID office that night.

They collected call data and verified it with technical evidence. Four CIs, three SSIs and some staff members who were on duty were called and statements were taken from them. They also admitted that they were beaten on the orders of the superiors. After that, they admitted that the CID boss came directly with some masked men and beat the MP. Moreover, while beating the MP, he had shown the same to some other person from his mobile video.

When Raghuramakrishna Raju was taken into custody, Guntur CID ASP Vijayapal acted as the investigating officer. Investigating authority should be responsible for whatever happens in custody. The statements given by the sentry that the CID chief had come along with the doctor’s statement that Raghurama had bleeding injuries became crucial in this case.

In this order, the police have been hunting extensively for Vijaypal for a few days. Notices have been sent to his home and he has been asked to attend the hearing but he is still in hiding. It is suspected that the top police officers of the time gave protection to him with the intention that all their bonds would be exposed if they found him.

According to the police, they are running away using keypad phones with the intention of catching them through location if they use smartphones. The police resources reminding that  Vijaypal was promoted as ASP just before his retirement, so as to shut up his mouth against this custodial torture and after retirement also he was taken as OSD.

Raghuram was first examined by doctors from general medicine, orthopedics and heart departments at Guntur Teaching Hospital. When some of them said that he was injured, they were pressured to a great extent and made false reports. GGH Superintendent Neelam Prabhavathi reported to the High Court that he did not have any injuries.

As part of the latest investigation, some doctors also confirmed in the statement given to the police that there were injuries on Raghurama’s body at that time. It is reported that one or two policemen are likely to become approvers in this case.
