The prestigious and much awaited 96th Oscars also known as the Academy Awards, a coveted event which recognises the best artists and technicians for their contribution to films every year, happened at the renowned Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Jimmy Kimmel, a popular Television host, shouldered the event this year as well to complete the fourth stint at the Oscars in the same role.
This year, Christopher Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer, a biopic of the father of atom bomb, dominated the event as swept 7 awards in various categories. Cillian Murphy bagged the best actor award for his stupendous performance and Nolan also made history as he picked up the first Oscars for his directional skills after losing it for Dunkirk. The film also made splash in other categories like editing, score and Cinematography. Robert Downey Jr won the best supporting actor award.
Emma Stone, who won her first Oscar for her performance in La La Land, sprung a suprise as she walked away with her second Oscar for her role in offbeat period comedy Poor Things. The film also picked up awards for production design, hairstyling and makeup and costume design.
Jonathan Glazer’s German and Polish-language Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest was named best international feature, the first ever British film to win in this category. The film also won for sound.
Barbie, which dominated the box office war against Oppenheimer, won just one award from its eight nominations, taking home the best original song Oscar for Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For?. Eilish, winning with brother and collaborator Finneas, received a standing ovation earlier in the evening after performing the song on stage. The pair previously won for No Time to Die.
Ryan Gosling also performed his nominated song I’m Just Ken in a diamond-studded pink suit surrounded by dancing Kens, including stars from the film, as well as a guitar cameo from Slash.
