Nikhil’s Spy : How over-ambition led to a disastrous result

Nikhil Siddhartha’s Karthikeya-2 was a runaway hit in North India because the story laced with mysticism resonated well with audiences there. The unexpected yet stupendous box office success has prompted Nikhil to take up universal subjects to expand his pan-India market further. Unfortunately, his attempts to consolidate his popularity beyond the Telugu States received a huge setback with the disappointing result of his latest offering, Spy, in other territories.

Though Spy secured strong openings in Andhra and Telangana, it failed to evoke even minute response in North India because of the lackluster story and scattershot screenplay. One of the main reasons for this poor result is the over-ambition of Nikhil and his team. Let’s find out what happened.

Nikhil signed to work on Spy even before the release of Karthikeya-2. Seeing the reception for Karthikeya-2 in North India, Nikhil, and his team made many changes to the script in between and inserted the unnecessary part of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose just to make it more appealing to pan-India audiences.

Unfortunately, their attempts received a severe backlash because the story has nothing concrete about the mystery surrounding the death of Netaji as it was projected in the teaser and trailers. The scathing reviews and poor word of mouth gave negligible shares to Spy in all territories beyond Andhra and Telangana. It ended up giving a big shock to Nikhil and his team.
