The tragic stampede at Sandhya Theatre during the premiere of Pushpa: The Rule, which resulted in the death of a woman, has caused national outrage and controversy. The case has also led to the arrest of actor Allu Arjun, whose regular bail application is opposed by the police. Political discussions surrounding the case continue to intensify, adding fuel to the already heated situation.
In a significant move, the NHRC has issued notices to the Telangana police, asking them to explain their conduct on the fateful day of the stampede. The commission specifically pointed its attention to the high-handed use of force in the form of a lathi charge on December 4.
Notices were issued to the DGP and the Police Commissioner, Hyderabad, requiring both of them to submit a comprehensive ATR in four weeks. The NHRC has acted following a complaint in writing submitted by advocate Rama Rao Immaneni. Immaneni alleged that the police mishandled the entire incident.
The involvement of the commission is expected to bring increased scrutiny on the police’s conduct in the event. The investigation may also reveal their response to the stampede and the aftermath. The situation is expected to continue unfolding, and NHRC’s inquiry will keep the incident in the public eye and intensify calls for accountability.
