Actor Naga Chaitanya recently opened up about his experience portraying Tatayya (ANR) in the acclaimed film Mahanati. Appearing as a guest on the ZEE5 show Jayammu Nischayammu Raa, Chaitanya shared candid insights about his career, reflecting on the challenges he has faced and emphasizing the importance of learning from life’s obstacles with a positive mindset.
Chaitanya revealed that when director Nag Ashwin first approached him for the role of Tatayya, he tried to avoid it, feeling that no one could live up to the legendary actor’s stature. “I told Nag Ashwin, ‘How can I portray ANR? It’s impossible for me. Forget it,’” Chaitanya recalled. At the time, he was shooting for Savyasachi and had a look with a beard that he believed was unsuitable for the role. He even attempted to decline by citing his unfit appearance.
A month later, Ashwin returned to him, insisting that the beard could be digitally removed using VFX and that Chaitanya was the only actor suitable for the role. “That’s when I agreed,” Chaitanya said. He added that upon reflection, he realized that if he didn’t accept the role, another actor would, and he couldn’t bear to see someone else play Tatayya.
Chaitanya described the opportunity as a privilege and a way to express his admiration for ANR. “I considered it a once-in-a-lifetime chance to portray him and show my respect and love for the legend,” he said. His heartfelt revelation highlights the responsibility he felt in stepping into the shoes of one of Indian cinema’s most iconic figures.
