Mohanlal Reveals Why a Godfather Sequel Isn’t Possible

Wednesday, March 26, 2025

The much-awaited Malayalam film L2: Empuraan, the second part of the blockbuster Lucifer, is ready to hit the screens on March 27. The film, helmed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Mohanlal in the lead role, has already generated a huge buzz, and the makers are sure of its success.

As fans would remember, Lucifer was re-made in Telugu as Godfather, with Megastar Chiranjeevi and directed by Mohan Raja. But Godfather did not fare well at the box office, and one of the reasons cited was that a large section of the Telugu audience had already seen the original Lucifer, and therefore interest in the remake was lost.

While doing the Telugu promotions of L2: Empuraan, Mohanlal was asked whether he had seen Godfather. He said he had and added that the story had been changed in the remake. Mohanlal also clarified an essential point stating that although Lucifer has a sequel, it would not be possible for Godfather to have one (Godfather 2).

He explained that important characters of Lucifer were cut out in Godfather, so it was almost impossible to remake L2: Empuraan in Telugu. One such important character is the one played by Tovino Thomas, who was cut out from Godfather. Director Mohan Raja allegedly left out this role, thinking that it was not important to the Telugu plot. But the newly released trailer of L2: Empuraan shows that Tovino Thomas’s character has an important role to play in molding the sequel’s plot.

This is one of the main reasons that it would be difficult to make a Telugu remake of L2: Empuraan. As the release date of the sequel draws near, fans can’t wait to see how things pan out, and this has helped make L2: Empuraan one of the most expected movies of the year. The information from Mohanlal puts another spin on the chatter surrounding the movie and its relation to Lucifer and Godfather.
