Kamal Haasan Responds To Controversy Over Kannada Language Remarks

Monday, December 8, 2025

Actor Kamal Haasan has addressed the controversy sparked by his recent comments regarding the Kannada language. Amid widespread criticism and calls from Kannada-speaking communities demanding an apology, Kamal clarified that his remarks were made out of affection and that love does not require an apology. He emphasized that his comments were informed by discussions with historians and carried no ill intent.

Kamal Haasan stated, “I spoke with love. Many historians have educated me about the history of the language. Tamil Nadu is a unique state known for its inclusivity — leaders from diverse backgrounds have served as Chief Ministers. When I faced difficulties in Chennai, Karnataka stood by me, offering support and shelter. Politicians are not qualified to comment on linguistic matters, and this applies to me as well. Such discussions should be entrusted to historians, archaeologists, and language experts.”

The controversy intensified after Kamal Haasan’s remarks at the recent ‘Thug Life’ event in Chennai, where he claimed that Kannada originated from Tamil. This statement drew sharp criticism from Karnataka BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who reaffirmed Kannada’s rich and ancient heritage. They pointed out that Kamal’s assertions overlooked established linguistic history.

The actor’s comments have reignited debates on linguistic pride and cultural sensitivity, underscoring the need for informed and respectful discourse on language history.
