Baahubali star Prabhas is back on the sets of his upcoming science fiction thriller Kalki 2898AD. The big-budget space opera is gearing up for release on May 9th this year. Besides introducing the lead characters through interesting posters, the makers gave a sneak peek into the ambitious world of Kalki through a spectacular glimpse at the Comic-Con event in San Diego last year.

The glimpse hinted that Kalki 2898AD is a time travel period drama with larger-than-life characters and a grand canvas. There have been numerous reports since the start of the shooting that the film’s story has a close nexus with the Indian epic Mahabharata. But, nothing was revealed in the teaser about this connection.

For the first time, director Nag Ashwin spilled the beans about the film’s story. During his recent media interaction at an event, the Yevade Subrahmanyam director divulged that the story of ‘Kalki 2898AD’ starts in Mahabharata and ends in 2898AD, spanning 6000 years. He also informed that the story is very much connected to Indian roots even though it has a time-travel concept and has shades of Hollywood’s Blade Runner.

Referring to the 2898AD in the title, he said that if we go back to 6000 years from this date, it would be around 3000 BC, that is when the last avatar of Lord Krishna passed away.

So, it is clear that Kalki 2898AD has a mythological touch with a futuristic set-up and science fiction backdrop. It would be interesting to see how well Nag Ashwin executes his ambitious vision on the big screen.

Kalki features a stellar cast in the form of Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Disha Patani and Kamal Haasan in significant roles. Vyjayanthi Movies Banner is behind this film.
