India Weighs Impact of US Court’s Tariff Decision

India’s government announced it’s “closely studying” the fallout after America’s highest court rejected former President Trump’s global tariffs. The Department of Trade and Industry confirmed they’re examining the US Supreme Court ruling and Trump’s response.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Trump Tariffs

In a major legal decision, the US Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that Trump’s sweeping tariffs broke federal law. Chief Justice John Roberts stated the tariffs went beyond what’s permitted. This ruling struck down existing tariffs imposed globally under Trump’s presidency.

Trump’s Immediate Response: New 10% Global Tariff

Just hours after the court decision, Trump called it “terrible” and announced replacement tariffs. He revealed a new 10% charge on imports worldwide, declaring it “effective immediately.” Trump specified this would be applied using Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974.

How the New Tariff Works

Section 122 allows US presidents to impose temporary import taxes for balance-of-payment reasons. Trump’s 10% tariff can last up to 150 days. He clarified this is separate from existing national security tariffs still in place.

India-US Trade Deal Faces Tariff Shift

Trump made surprising comments about India’s trade relationship with America. He claimed the current deal makes India “pay tariffs” while the US doesn’t – calling this a reversal from past arrangements. “We did a little trick,” Trump remarked.

Trump’s Take on Modi Negotiations

The former president praised Prime Minister Modi as a “great gentleman” but accused India of previously “cheating” America. He insisted the renegotiated deal now benefits the US: “Nothing changes, they’re going to pay tariffs and we’re not.” White House officials confirmed India would face the new 10% charge.
