Former Chief Minister and BRS Chief KCR reminisced about the challenging days when even pronouncing the word “Telangana” was difficult, with the Assembly Speaker issuing orders to avoid its use. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of the state’s formation at Telangana Bhavan, KCR reflected on the unbearable hardships endured by Telangana. He began by paying homage to the martyrs, describing it as an emotional moment.
KCR recalled the 1969 Telangana movement, which arose due to discrimination by Andhra rulers. Despite its vigor, the movement faltered when it deviated from its path. He emphasized the importance of remembering all those who fought for Telangana, highlighting Professor Jayashankar, who remained steadfast in the cause throughout.
He shared personal memories of Jayashankar, who consistently stood by him and documented the injustices faced by Telangana, even in the absence of computers. Jayashankar analyzed every budget to expose the unfair treatment of the region, with the Mulki rules being a significant issue. KCR recounted an incident where activists, facing bullets at the Raj Bhavan gate, threw stones in retaliation. Nine people lost their lives on the railway tracks during this confrontation.
KCR noted that the Supreme Court had ruled in favor of the Mulki Rules, which subsequently sparked the Jai Andhra movement. In response to the deaths of up to 70 people during this movement, the central government amended the Constitution without overturning the Supreme Court’s decision.
