Election Commissioner Arun Goel tendered his resignation just prior to the Lok Sabha election in 2024. President Droupadi Murmu formally accepted his resignation on Saturday, leaving the Election Commission under the sole leadership of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, with no additional election commissioners.
The gazette notification issued on Saturday stated, “In accordance with clause (1) of Section 11 of The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the President has approved the resignation submitted by Shri Arun Goel, Election Commissioner, effective from March 9th, 2024.”
