Renowned filmmaker Sukumar shared that he has long followed actor-director Upendra’s films for inspiration in screenplay writing. He made these remarks during the teaser launch event of Seetha Payanam held on Wednesday.
Seetha Payanam is directed by actor Arjun and features Niranjan and Arjun’s daughter Aishwarya in lead roles, with Arjun also playing a significant part.
Speaking about Arjun, Sukumar said, “Arjun and Upendra are not only actors but accomplished directors, so discussing them is a bit intimidating. I had the opportunity to work as an assistant director on Hanuman Junction, starring Arjun. I observed him from afar back then, and he remains the same today. He has a natural charisma that attracts people, and despite many challenges, he has never stepped back. With Jaihind, he established himself as both director and actor. Now, he is making Seetha Payanam for his daughter. The making of this film itself could be a story worth telling.”
On Upendra’s impact, Sukumar added with a smile, “Directors who made pathbreaking films like A, Om, and Upendra could have retired long ago. If I had made films like those, I wouldn’t have retired yet. Upendra’s three films have been a major source of inspiration for my screenplays. He has a knack for surprising audiences, and I admit I ‘borrowed’ that trait from him.”
Sukumar also praised the film’s music and choreography, saying, “Before becoming a director, Anoop Rubens was a well-known keyboard player and I have always been a fan. The songs composed by him for Seetha Payanam are impressive. The track ‘E Ooriki Velthave Pilla’ immediately convinced me that Chandrabose had written the lyrics. It’s a pleasure to reunite after a long time through this event. The choreography is excellent as well. For Pushpa 2, Suseki composed about 80% of the dance moves herself, though she hasn’t received full credit yet. Performances by Aishwarya and Niranjan are commendable. I also enjoy watching Bithiri Satti’s humorous videos; he truly captivates with his dialogue delivery,” he concluded.
