Director Prem Kumar has revealed that his critically acclaimed Tamil romantic drama 96, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha, was initially conceived as a Hindi film with Abhishek Bachchan in the lead role. Speaking at a recent discussion, Prem Kumar disclosed that he tailored the script for the Hindi market but faced difficulties in reaching out to Abhishek.

“I originally planned 96 as a Hindi film and developed the script accordingly. I wanted to cast Abhishek Bachchan as the protagonist, but at that time, I had no way to approach him or access the necessary contacts,” he said.

Discussing his connection to Hindi cinema, Prem Kumar added, “I am fluent in Hindi as my father grew up in North India and was an avid Bollywood movie watcher. His influence led me to watch many Hindi films during my childhood. One of my favorite actors is Naseeruddin Shah. I have recently completed a script, which I intend to make in Hindi, keeping in mind the preferences of the audience there.”

96 narrates the emotional journey of childhood sweethearts who reunite after 20 years, with performances by Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha receiving widespread acclaim.

Prem Kumar also confirmed plans for a sequel. “A sequel to 96 was not initially planned, but the overwhelming audience response inspired me to continue the story. The script is complete, and the project will begin once Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha’s schedules align,” he stated.

The film was later remade in Telugu as Jaanu, featuring Sharwanand and Samantha in the lead roles.
