Top-league actors usually prefer big-ticket directors to play a safe game so as to ensure minimum guarantee performance at the box office. This has been a long established strategy in Tollywood. But, Megastar Chiranjeevi seems to be going against the grain to set a new trend. Of late, he preferring to work with inexperienced and budding filmmakers who have proved their mettle just with one big hit.
Chiranjeevi is currently working with Mallidi Vassishta for his upcoming Magnum Opus Vishwambhara, a big budget socio fantasy entertainer. Vassishta has delivered a blockbuster with his debut film Bimbisara headlined by Kalyan Ram. Impressed with the directional skills, Chiru gave a golden opportunity to the upcoming director in the form of Vishwambhara.
Now, he announced a new project with another new generation director Srikanth Odela who is fresh from the success of Nani’s blockbuster mass entertainer Dasara. It is like a drama come true moment for Srikanth because he is a hard core fan of Chiranjeevi.
While it is an encouraging sign that these talented and inexperienced directors are able to impress an A-lister just with their debut films, the new strategy adopted by Chiranjeevi has become a topic of discussion in the industry circles.
Many feel that Chiranjeevi cultivated a taste to work with new directors to seek fresh ideas and to extract the best from them as they are just in the beginning of their careers. This formula is like a double edged sword because working with inexperienced filmmakers can yield both positive and negative results.
Filmmaking is all about handling pressure and delivering the best from what is written on paper. These directors might have impressed Chiru with their script and narration but they need to deliver the goods when the script goes to the sets. If they succumb due to pressure of working with a big star like Chiranjeevi, the outcome will be disastrous.
We need to wait and see what these young directors have in store for Chiranjeevi and his fans. Only then we can come to conclusion whether it is a risky proposition or a safe bet for the Matinee Idol of Tollywood.
