Nayanthara is in the news for a few reasons, her remarkable career and the recent controversy around her Netflix documentary “Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.” She has had an intimate portrait filmed covering both her career successes and personal demons and there was obvious interest in this subject matter. It was clearly of massive interest to viewers.
But the film has triggered legal proceedings for using movie scenes shot without requisite permissions. The most prominent one is using footage from blockbuster “Chandramukhi” owned by AP International. The company has moved to the Madras High Court, filing a petition against the producers of the documentary for copyright violation.
Subsequently, the court has served formal notices on Netflix and the Tarc Studios, requesting an immediate take-down of the controversial footage. AP International is further asking for damages of ₹5 crore as their work was used without authorisation.
While the legal process progresses, fans and industry analysts look forward to the reaction of the documentary’s creators. The resolution of these cases may have broader implications on using film content in biographical documentaries.
