Anupama Parameswaran’s ‘Janaki vs State of Kerala’ Caught in Censor Dispute Over Title

The upcoming Malayalam film Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring Anupama Parameswaran in the lead role, has landed in a censorship controversy. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has reportedly objected to the use of the name ‘Janaki’ in the title, citing concerns over religious sentiments, and has refused to issue a certificate unless the title is changed.
The film revolves around the story of a rape survivor, with Anupama portraying the titular character. Director Praveen Narayanan, responding to the CBFC’s objection, stated that ‘Janaki’ is a widely used name and not intended to refer directly to the mythological figure Sita Devi. “There is nothing in the film that disrespects or misrepresents Sita Devi. The film is in its final stage of post-production, and altering the title at this point is extremely difficult,” he said, urging the board to reconsider its decision.
Supporting the filmmakers, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) criticised the CBFC’s stance, terming it “unreasonable.” The association questioned the practicality of changing the title when the name ‘Janaki’ is already integral to the film’s dialogues and narrative.
Janaki vs State of Kerala is a courtroom thriller that also features veteran actor Suresh Gopi in a pivotal role as a lawyer. With the CBFC delaying certification, the film’s producers have reportedly approached the court seeking intervention. The film carries the tagline “Truth Will Prevail.”
