Tirumala Laddu Scandal Sparks Fiery Debate
A heated argument erupted in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly over corruption involving Tirumala’s sacred Laddu Prasadam. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu launched a strong attack against opposition leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy and his late father, former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR).
Alleged Attack on Hindu Traditions
Chandrababu claimed attacks on Hindu practices in Tirumala began under YSR’s rule in 2005. He specifically accused Samuel, then Panchayat Raj Secretary and a Christian, of issuing controversial orders. The order reportedly tried to redefine Tirumala’s traditional seven holy hills as just two hills.
Chandrababu expressed outrage, stating, “These ideas were so extreme even the British didn’t consider them.” He emotionally questioned, “Will these seven sacred hills become two?” and referenced the popular devotional chant “Edukondala Vada Govinda Govinda” to highlight the importance of the site.
Years of Division and Hidden Agendas?
The CM recalled how YSR’s 2005 decision caused deep divisions among Hindus nationwide for two years. He hinted at potential retaliation if he fought the issue back then, suggesting opponents spread “fake propaganda” to silence critics. Chandrababu believes public pressure eventually forced YSR to backtrack.
Inquiry Exposes Shocking Findings
Responding to demands from religious leaders, an inquiry committee chaired by retired Justice Siddappa was formed. Their report confirmed several controversial findings:
Beyond the Hills Controversy
The committee didn’t stop at the hills issue. It alleged pagan propaganda was spreading through Tirumala’s educational institutions, shops, and workplaces. Shocking claims included the sale of liquor and meat within the holy town.
Controversial Appointments
The report also criticized key appointments made by YSR. It recommended removing Roshaiah, a Christian, as chairman of Tirumala’s governing authority. Further, YSR appointed a Christian as Vice-Chancellor of TTD-run Padmavati University – a move Chandrababu strongly condemned.
Chandrababu also recalled actively fighting against forced religious conversions during YSR’s era.
Assembly Erupts Over Laddu Scandal
The debate intensified as ministers and MLAs argued about adulterated Laddu Prasadam. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s sharp comments drew loud applause multiple times. Chandrababu used the platform to revisit past incidents involving Tirumala’s protection.
With no opposition members present (the YCP boycotted), the government’s arguments faced no pushback. Officials stated clearly: if the YCP had acknowledged any wrongdoing earlier, this debate wouldn’t be necessary. All eyes are now on how the opposition will respond to these explosive allegations.
