Telangana Local Elections: Who’s in Charge?
Elections just wrapped up for Telangana’s local governments! On Monday, leaders were chosen for seven city corporations and 105 municipalities. People voted for Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Chairpersons, and Vice-Chairpersons to run their local areas. These leaders get to govern for five whole years.
Small Positions, Big Respect
Don’t underestimate these jobs! They come with serious prestige. If the Prime Minister visits town, the Mayor or Chairperson gets top billing in official events. But here’s the twist: candidates spend insane amounts—crores of rupees—to win these positions. And the salary they get afterward? That’s a whole different story.
How Much Do They Actually Earn?
Ready for a shocker? After all that campaign cash spent, the paychecks are super modest:
Municipalities (Over 50,000 people):
- Chairperson: ₹19,500/month
- Deputy Chairperson: ₹9,750/month
- Councillor: ₹4,550/month
City Corporations:
- Mayor: ₹65,000/month
- Deputy Mayor: ₹32,500/month
- Corporator: ₹7,800/month
Perks Beyond Paychecks
Salaries aren’t everything though. Mayors and Chairpersons get vehicle allowances and staff support. Plus, they enjoy job security: for four whole years, rival politicians can’t try to kick them out with a no-confidence vote.
Changing Leaders Isn’t Easy
After the four-year safety net? Removing them requires serious effort. Half the voting members must petition for it, then pass the motion with a two-thirds majority. So while salaries might seem low compared to campaign spending, the position comes with power, perks, and protection.
