Chennai: Actor and politician Kamal Haasan has emphasized that education is the only weapon capable of eradicating perpetual slavery. Speaking at an event organized by actor Suriya’s Agaram Foundation, Haasan urged people to hold firmly onto education instead of resorting to any other means.
“Without education, we cannot win because a majority of ignorant people can defeat you. That is why we must cling to education,” Haasan said. He called on governments to increase investments in educational systems and social empowerment initiatives.
Criticism of NEET
Haasan strongly criticized the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), stating that since its implementation in 2017, it has shattered the dreams of economically and socially disadvantaged students aspiring to enter medical education. “In the coming years, you won’t see such doctors because these children have been unable to continue their efforts. That’s why we oppose NEET—it has blocked their educational opportunities. Only education can empower us to change such laws,” he said.
Views on Cinema and Social Service
Highlighting the difference between acting and public service, Haasan remarked, “In cinema, you receive a crown for good acting, but in social service, you receive a crown of thorns. Accepting that requires a strong heart because no one will do social service for us—we must do it ourselves.”
Meeting with Tamil Nadu CM
Haasan also recounted a recent discussion with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, during which he conveyed that NGOs engaged in social service are not seeking funds but only permission to carry out their work. The Chief Minister assured action on the matter. Haasan said he is proud to be part of this cause and stressed that true leadership is not about holding a position of power but about serving society, often without recognition.
