The latest Superman film, part of one of Hollywood’s most iconic superhero franchises, is making a strong impact at the global box office. However, in India, the film has sparked controversy over censorship, particularly the removal of a 33-second kissing scene by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
While Hollywood films often face cuts in India for scenes involving intimacy or violence, the decision to censor key moments in Superman has drawn backlash from a section of the audience. Many viewers, particularly from the younger generation, have taken to social media to express frustration over what they view as outdated moral policing.
Among those criticising the CBFC is Bollywood actress Shreya Dhanwanthary, who questioned the need for such edits. In a social media post, she stated, “Audiences spend their money and time to watch a film—they should have the freedom to choose what they want to see.”
Her comments have gone viral, adding fuel to ongoing debates over censorship, creative freedom, and viewer rights in the Indian film industry. The CBFC has not yet issued an official response regarding the specific edits made to the Superman film.
