Telangana Assembly Chaos: Opposition Party Suspended
During budget sessions in the Telangana Assembly on Sunday, a major conflict erupted. Opposition members from the BRS party attempted to storm the speaker’s podium, creating chaos. The speaker responded by calling security marshals, who forcibly removed the BRS members. Consequently, all BRS MLAs and MLCs were suspended until the budget sessions conclude—marking the first complete suspension of the opposition in the assembly’s history.
The Root of the Dispute
The clash stemmed from BRS’s two-day demand for action against Raghava Constructions, a firm owned by Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, over alleged illegal activities. The ruling party retaliated by accusing the family of former BRS minister Harish Rao of involvement in crimes. This back-and-forth intensified when Chief Minister Revanth Reddy publicly criticized Harish Rao on Sunday.
March and Committee Demands
BRS legislators marched from Gun Park to the assembly holding placards, insisting on forming a House committee to investigate Raghava Constructions. When the issue was raised for discussion, the government shifted focus to other topics, including the Kaleswaram project, further frustrating the opposition.
Government’s Counterargument
Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu stated that the CID has already been ordered to investigate Raghava Construction Company. He argued that BRS’s push for a House committee was unethical since a CID probe was active. This defense angered Harish Rao, who stood up in the assembly to protest and tried to approach the podium.
Confrontation and Suspension
Marshals intervened to stop Harish Rao, physically removing him from the house. Following this, the speaker suspended all BRS members for the remainder of the budget sessions. This unprecedented move highlights the deepening political tensions between the ruling party and the main opposition over corruption allegations.
