US Vice President Visits Hungary to Support Prime Minister Orban

JD Vance, the US Vice President, is traveling to Budapest to strengthen support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Orban’s Fidesz party is preparing for its most challenging election in over ten years, with the vote scheduled for April 12.

Recent US Endorsements for Orban

The White House confirmed Vance’s two-day trip for meetings with Hungarian leaders. This follows earlier backing from President Donald Trump in February and a visit from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this month to demonstrate solidarity.

Opposition Leads in Polls

Kim Lane Scheppele, a Princeton University professor who has long analyzed Orban’s government, believes Vance’s trip aims to spotlight the alliance between Trump and Orban. She is skeptical it will sway voters, noting that polls show the opposition, led by Peter Magyar and his Tisza party, with a lead of 8 to 20 percent.

Why Voters Are Turning Against Orban

Orban has ruled Hungary for 16 years. Critics accuse him of undermining courts, media, and fair elections. However, many Hungarians are frustrated with corruption, struggling public services, and economic problems. Magyar, a former Fidesz insider who left the party, has built his campaign on these issues and promises to improve ties with the European Union.
