Shiv Pratap Shukla: From UP Politics to Telangana Governor
Shiv Pratap Shukla, a long-time BJP leader, has been appointed as the new Governor of Telangana. This change is part of a sudden shuffle of governors by the central government, moving him from Himachal Pradesh where he was previously posted.
A Strong Start in Politics
Shukla comes from Rudrapur village in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. He has deep roots in the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). During India’s Emergency in 1975, he was arrested under a special law and spent 19 months in jail for his activism. He officially joined the BJP in 1983 and worked with its student wing, ABVP.
Climbing the Political Ladder
Shukla first won an election as an MLA from Gorakhpur in 1989 and again in 1991. He became a junior education minister in the BJP government led by Kalyan Singh. He went on to win more assembly seats and served as a minister in multiple state governments, including those of Kalyan Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta, and Raj Nath Singh.
Rift with UP’s Chief Minister
After Yogi Adityanad became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, tensions grew between him and Shukla. There were reports that Yogi didn’t support Shukla during a parliamentary election, causing a fallout. To resolve this, the party elevated Shukla to the national level by sending him to the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament) and later appointing him as Union Minister of State for Finance in 2017.
Journey to Governorship
Shukla held the finance minister role until July 2022. After a short break, he was named Governor of Himachal Pradesh in February 2023. His recent transfer to Telangana is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to place an experienced leader in a key state.
Standing His Ground as Governor
Shukla has shown he’s not afraid to voice his opinions. In Himachal Pradesh, which has a Congress-led state government, he publicly disagreed over the selection of university vice-chancellors. He also made news when parts of his official speech in the state assembly were skipped, highlighting his independent approach.
With a clean record aside from his differences with Yogi, Shukla’s career reflects decades of dedicated service. His move to Telangana, another state with a Congress government, suggests the BJP values his ability to operate autonomously and handle complex political landscapes.
