Violence Erupts at Popular Temple Photoshoot
A routine pre-wedding photoshoot at the famous Bettada Bhairaveshwara Temple in Karnataka turned into a nightmare for a group of photographers. The incident, which happened on a Friday morning at the hilltop temple in Sakleshpur, left several photographers injured and thousands of rupees worth of camera gear smashed.
What Went Down?
The Shoot Starts Normally
The morning began like any other. Photographer Naveenandan KS, along with his colleague Chetan and an engaged couple, arrived around 7:30 am for their shoot. About 30 minutes later, a second team from Bengaluru—photographers Abhishek and Yashwant—also came to the scenic spot, a favorite for pre-wedding pictures and tourism.
A Small Dispute Explodes
Things took a bad turn when a local man named Abhi from Marubailu village confronted the Bengaluru team over what was described as a minor issue. A heated argument broke out, and Yashwant was allegedly attacked during the clash.
The Attack Intensifies
The situation got much worse around 9 am. Reports say Abhi returned to the temple area in two cars with seven to eight other men. The group, identified as Prashanth, Rakshay, Aravind, Uchit, Prajwal, and Nishanth, is accused of launching a violent assault on the photographers. They used wooden sticks and stones.
The Damage and Injuries
Naveenandan filed a police complaint detailing the brutal attack. He claimed the attackers grabbed his neck and tried to choke him. His gold chain was reportedly stolen. The worst part for the professionals was the destruction of their gear. Naveenandan stated his professional camera and lenses were smashed, causing an estimated loss of ₹500,000. Other equipment belonging to the photographers was also damaged.
The injured victims were rushed to hospitals. Some were treated at Sakleshpur Government Hospital, while others went to Hassan District Hospital. Their injuries were not life-threatening, but the trauma and financial loss were severe.
Police Action and Community Outrage
Based on the complaint, the Sakleshpur rural police registered a case (crime number 49/2026). The accused have been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including unlawful assembly, rioting, assault, and criminal damage. At the time of the report, the accused were reportedly absconding, and police were searching for them.
The attack has caused a huge stir, especially among photographers and content creators. Many point out that places like temples and tourist spots are common for shoots but often lack clear rules and security. The conversation has split: some say visitors must respect religious customs and get permissions, while many others strongly condemn the violent response.
The Bigger Debate
This incident has reignited a debate about managing public, historical, and religious spaces used for photography and social media content. While rules can vary, the use of violence is being widely criticized.
As investigations continue, people across Karnataka are calling for better safety for photographers, improved crowd control at popular tourist sites, and clear, fair guidelines for commercial and pre-wedding shoots at religious locations.
