Deep Sleep: Your Body’s Secret Repair Time

Deep sleep is way more than just catching Z’s. It actively rebuilds your body, makes your muscles stronger, helps your bones grow, and even burns fat. For teens, getting enough deep sleep is super important for growing to your full height.

The Growth Hormone Connection

The star of the show is growth hormone, which shoots up while you sleep. But scientists were confused about why bad sleep, especially the early deep stage called non-REM sleep, cuts down on this key hormone.

Brain Circuit Breakthrough

Researchers at UC Berkeley cracked the code. Their study in the journal Cell mapped the brain circuits that control growth hormone during sleep and found a new feedback loop to keep things balanced.

This helps us see how sleep and hormones team up. It could lead to new fixes for sleep problems tied to diseases like diabetes, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s.

“We know growth hormone and sleep are linked, but we actually recorded mouse brain activity to see the details,” said Xinlu Ding, a lead researcher. “This gives us a circuit to build future treatments on.”

Sleep Loss and Health Risks

Skipping sleep doesn’t just cause yawns. Because growth hormone manages sugar and fat in your body, poor sleep can raise your chances of obesity
