Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3 has run into controversy ahead of its scheduled release on June 27, following widespread backlash over the casting of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in a lead role. The criticism comes amid ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan and a prevailing industry consensus against the inclusion of Pakistani artists in Indian films.
The trailer for Sardaar Ji 3, which was recently released, introduced the film as a horror-thriller centered around a haunted mansion in the UK, with Diljit and Hania Aamir playing the lead roles. While the film’s genre and visuals attracted attention, the casting decision has drawn sharp criticism across social media platforms. Netizens have expressed their disapproval, citing national sentiment and industry guidelines that discourage collaboration with Pakistani talent.
In response to the growing criticism, B.N. Tiwari, President of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), stated that the organisation is considering a formal ban on the film’s release in India. “We will be issuing guidelines to prevent such films from being released. The industry stands united on this issue,” he said.
Producer Gunbir Singh Sidhu also addressed the controversy, clarifying that the film was shot before the recent escalation in India-Pakistan tensions. He added that the production team, keeping in mind public sentiment, has decided not to release the film in India. Following this announcement, the trailer was removed from social media platforms.
Actor Diljit Dosanjh issued a statement addressing the situation, saying, “Countries may be at odds, but we don’t have control over such matters. I believe in the power of music and art to bring people together. I’m proud to be part of a message that transcends borders. We must see humanity beyond nations and boundaries.”
The controversy has reignited debate within the film industry over cross-border artistic collaborations. As of now, the official release plans for Sardaar Ji 3 remain uncertain.
