Oscars Shortlist: Naatu Naatu from RRR makes the cut

The Oscars fever has gripped moviegoers across the globe with one month to go for the nominations to be announced for the 95th Academy Awards. The academy has announced the 10 categories: Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.

The shortlist in each category is determined by the jury members of that category except for the International Feature Film for which all members from all categories are allowed to participate. 

The much-hyped Indian blockbuster RRR got shortlisted in the Original Song category for Naatu Naatu song composed by MM Keeravani. This is the first time a song from a Telugu film got shortlisted by the academy. Naatu Naatu will now compete with 15 other songs for the final nominations. A total of 81 songs were considered by the academy team. 

 Unfortunately, RRR was snubbed in the shortlisted categories of ‘ Best Visual Effects ‘ and ‘Best Original Score’. India’s official entry to the Oscars, Chhello Show(a Gujarati film directed by Pan  Nalin) also got shortlisted in the Best International Film category. RRR is still in the race for the Best Film and the Best Director Category. 

The academy announced shortlists in 10 categories before announcing the nominations on January 24th. They include – Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.
