Story:

Kuberaa tells the story of a staggering ₹1 lakh crore oil scam — a high-level conspiracy involving powerful ministers and top bureaucrats. To quietly transfer the black money, the masterminds recruit four beggars from across India as frontmen. One of them is Deva (Dhanush), a simple man surviving on the streets of Tirupati.

Uneducated and unaware, these men have no clue they’re being used in a dangerous money-laundering scheme. Orchestrating this operation is Deepak (Nagarjuna), a former CBI officer with a strong moral code — but even he finds himself reduced to a puppet in the hands of the corrupt system he once fought against.

As the scam spirals out of control, questions begin to rise:
Will the massive sum reach its destination? What unexpected twists threaten to expose the truth? How did Deva end up trapped in this game — and more importantly, can he find a way out before it’s too late? These questions drive the emotional and suspenseful core of Kuberaa.

Review:

Nagarjuna is convincing as an earnest CBI police officer, delivering both intensity and vulnerability in equal proportions. His performance is at its best when it is emotional peak, leaving an indelible mark. Dhanush, playing Dev — a beggar with an unexpected inner strength and wisdom — is totally magnetic. His raw, realistic performance is perhaps one of his best performances in recent times. Rashmika Mandanna lends beauty and emotional intensity to the film with her performance that is gracious as well as earthy.

Playing the villain, Jim Sarbh introduces the ideal mix of sophistication and danger. He portrays the icy cold businessman with effortless ease. Supporting work by Dalip Tahil, Sunaina, and others gives the story depth and credibility.

Against the backdrop of a runaway financial fraud, Kuberaa delves into not only corruption but also larger concerns such as dignity, moral values, and individual redemption. What lends strength to the storytelling is Kammula’s emphasis on character development; every character has a clear past and motive, which makes their emotional journey palpable and resonant.

With all that said, the movie also encounters a few rough patches. The second half, although emotionally charged, falters in its earlier pace. The conflict between the hero and the antagonist could have been cranked up one level higher, and some scenes are ever so slightly over-extended, slowing down the overall pace.

On the technical side, Kuberaa is a feast for the eyes and ears. Niketh Bommi Reddy’s photography captures the mood of the film quite well — whether it is emotionally intense close-ups or grand wide shots, each frame is carefully framed. Editor Karthika Srinivas keeps the story going quite well for the most part, although a trimmer cut in certain places would have benefited. Devi Sri Prasad’s music makes the ride worthwhile — the songs are suited to the mood and his background score makes the emotional pull of the film stronger.

Director Shekhar Kammula, who is known for his sensitive and character-oriented films, remains faithful to his vision here. As both writer and director, he treats Kuberaa with seriousness, sincerity, and artistic maturity. Though the screenplay itself could have had a couple of more high points, the film succeeds in the end in presenting a socially conscious and emotionally charged experience.

The production values, thanks to Suniel Narang and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao, are of the highest order. The film is polished and big in scale without ever sacrificing its emotional essence — an uncommon equation.

Kuberaa is a finely etched emotional drama that scores big on performances, visual narration, and strong message. For all small narrative weak points, the movie is a welcome addition to Shekhar Kammula’s portfolio and a must-watch for those who love meaningful films.
