Hyderabad: BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao has sharply criticised the Congress-led Telangana government over the ongoing fertilizer shortage in the state, particularly urea. Alleging rampant black marketing, he demanded an immediate inquiry into the issue and questioned the government’s accountability.
Taking to social media platform X, KTR raised concerns over the spike in urea prices. “Why has the price of a urea bag, which should be available at ₹266.50 under subsidy, increased to ₹325? The state government must provide answers to the farmers and the public,” he said. He also questioned the artificial scarcity, asking who was creating the shortage and who was operating the black market behind the scenes. Despite making Aadhaar mandatory, he added, farmers are unable to receive even a single bag of urea, highlighting administrative failure.
KTR further accused the Congress government of failing to deliver on key poll promises such as Rythu Bharosa and farm loan waivers, leaving farmers in distress.
Meanwhile, the fertilizer shortfall during the ongoing Kharif season has intensified. Official data indicates a shortfall of 1.94 lakh metric tonnes of urea in Telangana. State Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, in a letter sent last week to the Centre, pointed out that while the central government had allocated 5 lakh tonnes of urea for the months of April, May, and June, only 3.06 lakh tonnes had been supplied. He urged Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers J.P. Nadda to release the remaining quota immediately. The minister also wrote to Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay, seeking their intervention in resolving the crisis.
