Iran’s Women’s Football Team’s Anthem Standoff
At the Women’s Asian Cup in Australia, Iran’s women’s football team sparked controversy. In their opening game, they stood silently during the national anthem. This followed Iranian state TV branding them “war traitors” for not showing loyalty.
The Reason Behind the Silence
The players were scared for their families back home. Their tournament started just after the US and Israel began airstrikes on Iran, leading to many deaths. The team feared that singing the anthem could bring harm to their loved ones under the current regime.
After heavy criticism in Iran, including from a radio host who called their actions shameful, the team changed their stance. In the next match, they sang and saluted during the anthem. Their coach, Marziyeh Jafari, also participated in the salute, raising concerns that government officials forced them to comply.
Tournament Results and Exit
Iran lost all their group games: 2-0 to the Philippines, 3-0 to South Korea, and 4-0 to Australia. They finished last in Group A without scoring a single goal and conceding nine.
