RCB Kicks Off IPL 2026 with a Thrilling Win

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) started their IPL 2026 journey on a high note, securing a six-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Chasing 202 runs, RCB reached the target with 26 balls to spare, finishing on 203 for 4, powered by outstanding half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal.

SRH Builds a Challenging Total

After choosing to bat first, SRH scored 201 for 9 in their 20 overs. Ishan Kishan, standing in as captain, was the star with an aggressive 80 off 38 balls, hitting eight fours and five sixes. His key partnership with Heinrich Klaasen (31 runs) helped SRH recover from a shaky start.

Early on, SRH lost quick wickets. Abhishek Sharma was out for just 7 after attempting a pull shot, and Travis Head along with Nitish Kumar Reddy also fell to similar errors, reducing SRH to 29 for 3 in 4.2 overs.

Duffy Shines on Debut

RCB’s bowlers, led by newcomer Jacob Duffy, exploited the pitch’s assistance. Duffy used the bounce effectively to trouble the batsmen, ending with excellent figures of 3 for 22 in four overs. His early breakthroughs put SRH under pressure right from the start.

RCB’s Chase Fueled by Kohli and Padikkal

RCB’s chase began with Phil Salt getting out early, but that brought together Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli. The duo built an unbeaten 101-run partnership in just 45 balls. Padikkal scored 61 off 26 balls, relying on clean timing and smart placement, while Kohli remained not out with 69 off 38, using powerful drives and shots along the ground.

The partnership accelerated the chase rapidly. RCB reached 50 in the fourth over, 76 during the powerplay, and 100 in 8.1 overs. Padikkal smashed his fifty in 21 balls but was later caught long-on by Klaasen. Kohli, who had been dropped by Klaasen earlier, completed his half-century in 33 balls and anchored the innings to the end.

Quick Contributions and Finishing Touch

Captain Rajat Patidar provided a vital boost with 31 off 12 balls before being dismissed, and Jitesh Sharma added some runs too. However, their wickets didn’t affect the outcome, as Kohli finished the match with a series of boundaries against Harshal Patel.

Match Impact and Highlights

This win showcases RCB’s potent batting lineup and the immediate impact of debutant Jacob Duffy. For SRH, Ishan Kishan’s explosive innings was a highlight, but early wickets hampered their progress. The pitch, unused for first-class cricket for nearly ten months, offered help to bowlers initially, but RCB’s batsmen adapted brilliantly to secure a comfortable victory.
