Story:
AK, also referred to as Red Dragon (Ajith), is a dangerous gangster dreaded by everyone. But for the sake of his wife (Trisha) and son, he chooses to forego his life of crime and surrender himself to the police and opt for imprisonment. His desire is simple—to shield his family from his black past and live a quiet life.
But his dark past won’t let him go that easily. As he tries to make amends, his history catches up with him in new ways. The story gets a dark twist when AK’s son is involved in a crisis, drawing AK back into the life that he sought to leave behind.
The story then raises several crucial questions: Why is AK’s son being targeted? What does AK’s past involve that continues to haunt him? Who is the gang after his family, and what is their motive? These gripping questions drive the rest of the story forward.
Review:
Ajith Kumar plays a larger-than-life gangster, giving a commanding performance. His persona is underscored by a robust, dominating body language and faultless modulation, both fitting in with his intense on-screen persona. Ajith’s new look in this movie is something to be noted, presenting something different from his typical roles, bringing an element of freshness for fans as well as newcomers.
Arjun Das excels with his flawless timing and depth of emotions, particularly in critical scenes that add drama to the movie. Sunil adds depth to his character, and Trisha charms and moves us with her enactment of the heroine. The support cast of other actors helps drive the story forward seamlessly, sustaining the audience’s interest.
Director Adhik Ravichandran manages to strike a balance between gorgeous visuals and action-packed sequences, but at times the film’s pacing is not even. Some scenes are needlessly dragged out, which spoils the overall momentum of the narrative. Although the film is full of suspense and action, it lacks the nail-biting tension needed to fully engage the audience. Therefore, some scenes are too predictable, losing their effect.
The emotional intensity that the movie tries to create during the climax, particularly with respect to Ajith Kumar’s character, is not quite effective. Even with the action sequences, the emotional return is disappointing, giving the audience a feel of wasted potential. Although action fans will enjoy the quick pace of the movie, it does not redefine the gangster genre.
While Adhik Ravichandran adapts a potentially good story for the screen, it is neither as creative nor fresh in storytelling. The film is enlivened through music supplied by G.V. Prakash Kumar, and the energy continues with good cinematography by Abhinandan Ramanujam. The film’s pace could benefit from cutting out some obvious superfluous scenes, however. Production is good, contributing towards the overall feel of the film being sleek.
Overall, Good Bad Ugly offers a decent action experience, supported by good performances from Ajith Kumar and the supporting cast. Sadly, its predictable story, slower movement, and lack of emotional content prevent it from being very memorable. Although it offers an acceptable action-filled story, it fails to contribute anything particularly innovative or revolutionary to the genre.
