Ex BRS MLA Chennamaneni Ramesh name removed from voters list in citizenship row

Friday, July 11, 2025

The authorities have removed the name of former MLA from Vemulawada constituency Chennamaneni Ramesh from the voter list. With this decision, official announcements were made in front of his residence. This has led to sensation not only across the state but also across the country.

It is an unusual development in the history of India that a prominent politician and a four-term MLA has been removed from the voter list. Ramesh was initially elected to the assembly as TDP candidate and later shifted to BRS.

The key behind these developments is the long-standing legal battle waged by the government whip and present Vemulawada Congress MLA Adi Srinivas. He has approached the court several times claiming that Chennamaneni Ramesh is not an Indian citizen. As a result of this effort, the state’s highest court, the Telangana High Court, recently issued a crucial verdict.

In that verdict, it was clarified that Chennamaneni Ramesh does not have Indian citizenship. As soon as the court verdict was announced, Adi Srinivas responded quickly and appealed to the concerned authorities to immediately implement the verdict and remove the former MLA’s name from the voter list.

Based on this, the authorities removed his name from the voter list and pasted notices in front of his residence. So far, no official response has been received from Chennamaneni Ramesh on these notices. While the authorities had issued notices on the citizenship dispute in the past too, they did not receive a proper response.

Now, steps have been taken to remove his name from the voter list. This development has put Chennamaneni Ramesh’s political future in question. A person who does not have Indian citizenship is constitutionally ineligible to vote in the country and contest elections. Even if he approaches the higher courts challenging this verdict, getting the High Court verdict quashed will be a big ordeal for him.

This incident may lead to new political issues in Telangana politics, especially in the Vemulawada constituency. Moreover, this case is likely to set an important precedent for the future implementation of Indian citizenship laws and election regulations. The entire affair has once again exposed the strength of the country’s citizenship rules and election laws, and the impartial role of the judiciary in their implementation.
