Controversy Surrounds YSR Kadapa District Renaming

Wednesday, November 6, 2024

The initiative to revert the name of YSR Kadapa district to its original designation, Kadapa, is gaining momentum among leaders from both the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the BJP. Health Minister Satya Kumar has made a formal appeal to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, stressing the district’s historical relevance as Devuni Gadapa, or the gateway to the renowned Tirumala temple. Likewise, BJP MLA C. Adinarayana Reddy supports the proposal, contending that adopting the name Kadapa would more accurately reflect the district’s legacy. This effort underscores the ongoing conversation about the cultural significance of district names in the area.

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) is strongly opposing the alliance government’s plan to rename YSR Kadapa district. Party leaders assert that the district was named to honor the late Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy when Andhra Pradesh was a united state in 2010. They point out that this name change was formalized by a gazette notification issued by the Congress government, led by Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, which officially recognized the district as YSR Kadapa.

Former MLA Ravindranath Reddy from Kamalapuram remarked that the district was renamed YSR Kadapa to honor the significant contributions of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to the region. He emphasized that this name change was a recognition of Reddy’s extensive services to the community. Additionally, Reddy expressed concern over the current political situation, stating, “The alliance government is only attempting to incite discord in the region.”
