Directed by Homi Adjania, “Cocktail 2” attempts to combine contemporary commentary on modern relationships with the formulaic structure of a Bollywood romantic triangle. The main trio is perfectly cast and the film's premise has real potential.
Visually the film is breathtaking. The setting of Sicily looks great and the cinematography captures the glamor beautifully. The songs and background music are pleasant and fit the mood. But the core problem is glaring: Although the film revolves around modern relationships, the film lacks the strong emotional conflict needed to keep the audience interested.
The first half focuses on parties and casual fun and offers some good moments and sharp dialogues. The second half moves into emotional territory, but doesn't bring everything into order until the climax. The biggest disappointment? The emotional connection between the main characters never feels authentic or moving.
In romantic dramas, the audience has to deal with the inner conflicts of the characters. Cocktail 2 fails here. The characters behave inconsistently, making it difficult to understand their motivations, even in emotional scenes.
