Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission Chairperson Rayapati Sailaja has taken strong exception to controversial comments made by YSR Congress leader Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy, stating that he will be formally served a notice. The Commission is directing him to appear in person and clarify his remarks regarding women from the Amaravati region.
The controversy began when a Sakshi Media journalist allegedly made highly objectionable comments, likening Amaravati women to prostitutes. Rather than condemning the comments, Sajjala was said to have stood by them and further insulted the protesting women by describing them as “demons,” “monsters,” and belonging to a “mixed lineage.” The remarks brought on an avalanche of public indignation throughout the state.
In response, a group of women from Amaravati met with Rayapati Sailaja at the Women’s Commission office in Mangalagiri, demanding immediate action. They alleged that YSRCP leaders have repeatedly disrespected women and are now venting frustration over the party’s election defeat.
Chairperson Sailaja strongly condemned the statement as unacceptable and highly offensive — particularly from a person holding a responsible political position. She stressed that public representatives must be careful with words and the effect those have on society.
This is not about political opposition. It’s about women’s dignity. Nobody is entitled to humiliate them — neither in public debate, nor under the cover of political authority,” she said.
Rayapati Sailaja also confirmed that the issue will be escalated to the National Commission for Women, ensuring that it receives attention at the highest level. “The Commission will not remain silent. Sajjala must give a formal explanation before us, and we will take the matter forward as per due process,” she added.
