Indonesia Shaken by Strong Earthquake, Tsunami Alert Up
On April 1, 2026, a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the northern Moluccas Sea off Ternate, Indonesia. The shaking has led to tsunami warnings for several nearby islands and coastal regions.
Quake Basics and Epicenter
The US Geological Survey reported the quake was first recorded as 7.8 but later revised to 7.4. It occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers, which is deeper than early estimates. The epicenter, or starting point, was approximately 120 kilometers from Ternate in North Maluku province. There are currently no reports of injuries.
