Surrey Shooting: Young Man Killed in Gang-Related Attack
A 27-year-old man from an Indian background was tragically killed in a targeted shooting in Surrey, British Columbia, on Saturday evening. Authorities believe the incident is connected to organized crime activities.
The Shooting Unfolds
The violence occurred around 6:39 p.m. at a townhouse complex in the Sullivan Heights area, specifically on 60 Avenue. Police officers from the Surrey Police Service rushed to the scene after hearing gunfire reports. They found the victim, later identified as Jasman Sekhon, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he died at the location.
Witness Accounts of the Attack
People living nearby told reporters that Sekhon was pursued by a dark-colored SUV before two individuals exited the vehicle and opened fire on him. This chase and sudden assault happened in a neighborhood that is usually calm, making the event especially shocking.
About the Victim, Jasman Sekhon
Investigators from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed Sekhon’s identity. They noted that he had previous interactions with law enforcement and was likely involved in illegal drug trafficking. This background suggests the shooting was a deliberate hit related to gang disputes.
Police Response and Burning Vehicle
About 15 minutes after the shooting, emergency crews discovered a blue Hyundai SUV completely on fire near the intersection of 186th Street and 44 Avenue. Police are examining whether this burned-out vehicle is linked to Sekhon’s murder, as such acts often signal gang-related violence.
Sergeant Freda Fong of IHIT described the shooting as “brazen” for happening in a typically peaceful area. She emphasized that detectives are working hard to uncover all details and find everyone responsible.
A Spike in Gun Violence
This deadly incident is part of a recent surge in shootings across Surrey. Local reports indicate there have been four separate gun violence cases in just the past two days, raising concerns about public safety in the community.
Call for Public Help
Police are urging anyone who was in the areas between 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday—especially near 60 Avenue or 186th Street and 44 Avenue—to come forward. They also request anyone with smartphone videos or surveillance footage to share it, as it could be crucial for the investigation.
